Welcome to Holistic Habits
Move over oranges, there’s a new vitamin C in town! In this post I’m going to show you how to make DIY homemade vitamin C balls. They’re made from vitamin C rich whole food ingredients such as Camu Camu berry and Acerola Cherry. The vitamin C in these chewables are easily absorbed and assimilated by the body and much superior to synthetic vitamin C pills! These Vitamin C balls are the tastiest way to get your daily dose of vitamin C. Keep reading to learn how to make them or watch my instructional YouTube video down below!
Now onto the recipe…
Down below I’ve listed some optional ingredients and why you might want to add them into your recipe. You can add as many as you want, or none at all. These Vitamin C chewables are so fun to experiment with and customize!
You will need some powder to roll, coat and store your vitamin C balls in. I have been using some ground Hibiscus Heaven Tea which contains Organic hibiscus, organic rosehips, organic orange peel, organic lemongrass, organic lemon peel and organic lemon oil. I simply put the loose tea into a coffee grinder and grind it into a powder. I’ve listed some powder options down below:
** This may initially seem pricey to buy all the ingredients the first time you make the vitamin c balls. however, you’re going to be able to make many batches with the ingredients. It’s an investment in your health!
Combine all your dry ingredients into a bowl and mix them together.
Slightly warm your raw honey to create a more fluid consistency. I do this by creating a double boiler with a heat safe glass bowl. You don’t want to heat the honey over 110 degrees because you want to maintain its raw benefits. You just want the honey to be runny enough so that you’re easily able to incorporate your dry ingredients into it. The higher your dry ingredients to honey ratio is, the harder your vitamin C chewables will be. If there’s too much honey, they will be softer and may stick together.
Slowly add one large spoonful of the powder mixture at a time to your warm honey and stir to combine.
**Once you start combining your honey mixture you must stay on task. If you walk away to do something for a few minutes, when you return your honey mixture might be hard to handle. If this is the case, place it back over warm water to soften again.
Keep combining the dry ingredients with the honey mixture until you find it too difficult to add anymore. If you’ve added all your dry ingredients but still find your mixture too soft, add in more Acerola Cherry powder until you get your mixture to the right consistency.
Put your coating/storing powder in a bowl. Scoop up the honey mixture and put it in the bowl of powder and coat it in the powder. The powder will make the mixture easier to handle. With your hands form the mixture into a ball. Cut the ball in half and roll each piece in powder again to coat. You will now have two balls. Cut them in half again. Keep repeating this process. ex) You’ll have 8 balls, then 16, then 32. You should be able to make around 80 balls by the end, depending on how big you make them.
You might ask “why don’t I just make one long roll and then cut it into 80+ pieces to speed the process up?” The reason is because you want to keep incorporating the powder to gradually make your balls harder so they have less of a tendency to stick together once they are completed.
**These Vit C & mineral balls can be a little difficult and time consuming to make the first time you make them, but once you get the hang of it, they are really easy and absolutely worth the effort.
Once all the Vitamin C balls have been formed, I like to transfer/store them in a glass lock container and cover with the leftover powder. The powder will help keep the vitamin c chewables from sticking together and once they’ve all been consumed you can use the leftover powder for your next batch.
Store them in the refrigerator and eat 2-3 per day. Honestly I could eat the whole batch in one sitting. They taste like candy to me! However they are medicinal! Too much vitamin c can cause loose stools. ENJOY!
